Consider the Ant
Education is important. But as parents and lovers of Jesus, we know there are more important things in life than a diploma (or a degree). We want our children to be prepared for life. Unfortunately, our modern education system focuses on passing to advance grades rather than preparation for after school.
At Adolesco Preparatory Academy, we also believe in the value of rigorous academics, but that doesn’t supersede our preparation as effective disciples of Jesus. In fact, they are one and the same.
Rise & Shine Discipleship
Every morning before classes begin, we gather our students and faculty together for a time of intentional discipleship. We take education seriously, but we want our graduates to be prepared for life.
Some months, we focus on themes such as Fruits of the Spirit or the Lord’s Prayer. To kick off our school year, our Principal, Mrs. Elizabeth Cash, taught on Proverbs 6:6.
Go to the ant, you sluggard;
consider its ways and be wise!
Lessons from the Ant
By emphasizing characteristics of ants, she correlated their attributes, such as responsibility, organization, and teamwork, to Biblical concepts like diligence, perseverance, and obedience. At Adolesco Prep, we focus on principles that will serve students well into adulthood. When Mrs. Cash taught about serving God, she provided scripture regarding honesty (James 4:17), humility (Psalms 37:23-24), and thoroughness (Proverbs 10:26), to name a few.
Just as the ant follows the orders of its queen, APA disciples of Christ follow and serve God. Jesus must not only be our Savior, but our Lord. To serve Him is to obey Him in faith. This theme is clear in 1 Samuel 15:22, “to obey is better than sacrifice,” and prominent throughout scripture.
Like the ant’s continuous work for its colony, diligence is vital for the health of the Kingdom. Diligence in faith, in academics, and in brotherhood (along with the aforementioned characteristics of Christ) are essential components to the discipleship of APA students. This focus is key for our students to be prepared for life.
When disciples of Christ follow His way, micro and macro levels of teamwork ensue within the Kingdom, and His people bring the Lord glory through the good fruit they bear. And according to John 15, the fruit we bear while abiding in the Vine will last. What parent doesn’t want their child to make a positive, lasting impact on the world?
Prepared for Life: A Group Effort
Teaching such lessons, time and time again, reinforces parental discipleship at home and pastoral discipleship at church. As we cultivate the extraordinary together, we guide our students to “increase in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and man” (Luke 2:52).
It is our daily mission to establish Kingdom Champions, prepared for life. As they go into their world, they will transform it for the glory of God.
